What the Lightning Knew

I dreamed once of standing at home plate as an umpire, lightning closing in, the game suspended but not called. The insulation I was wearing — meant to protect me — became the very thing keeping me from moving.
Some protections outlive their purpose. They stop guarding you and start gathering you, piece by piece, into someone smaller than who you actually are.
The dream wasn’t telling me to fear the storm. It was telling me to take off the gear built for a danger that had already passed, and walk back onto the field whole.
